This is a village house project of about 1,000 square feet that is situated in a very remote part of Sai Kung. The client is a bachelor who lives with is dog. The 1,000 square feet is equally distributed between 3 floors. The open kitchen; dark room; and powder room are located on the ground floor. The 1st floor is the living room, where his hi-fidelity sound system is located. The 2nd floor is the master bedroom and bathroom. There is also rooftop for barbecue which overlooks the mountains beyond.
In order to maximize the useable floor space of each floor, the client agreed with us on a spiral staircase. We designed a very sculptural staircase by bending a 11 mm thick steel plate to make the tread and riser in one piece. The shape in plan view resembles a propeller. Each one of these propellers are welded onto the center pole which had perviously been secured by welding at top and bottom. These propeller are an exercise in cantilever, as there are no additional support for the propellers.
The only railing is located at the floor and it is there to stop people from falling into the circular opening and onto the floor below.
